The Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft (a non-profit organisation) was founded in 1949 and is now the leading organisation for institutes of applied research in Europe , undertaking contract research on behalf of industry, the service sector and the government. Commissioned by customers in industry, it provides rapid, economical and immediately applicable solutions to technical and organisational problems.

The Fraunhofer Institute for Manufacturing Engineering and Automation (IPA), with its more than 200 employees is one of the biggest Fraunhofer Institutes and was founded more than 40 years ago in Stuttgart . The main focus of the research and development work carried out at the Fraunhofer IPA is directed at solving organisational and technological problems faced by industrial companies active in the manufacturing sector.

The Foresight Vehicle Initiative, now administered by The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders Limited (SMMT), is the UK's prime knowledge transfer network for the automotive industry, and is the UK's response to the worldwide crisis in transport.

The Foresight Vehicle Steering Group was set up by the Transport Panel and the DTI to define the detailed objectives of a programme designed to develop, demonstrate and exploit technology "... to stimulate the UK automotive supplier base to develop products and systems which satisfy increasingly stringent environmental requirements while meeting mass expectations for safety, performance, cost and desirability".

It consists of representatives of vehicle builders and their suppliers, independent research consultancies and university departments, government departments and user representatives such as motoring organisations.

The Centre for Technology Management, part of the University of Cambridge Department of Engineering, aims to bridge the gap between industry and university research for all topics concerned with the effective integration of technological considerations into business decision making. The Centre provides industrial technology managers and the wider technology management community with a unique resource for investigating effective technology management practices. Purdue University's Center for Technology Roadmapping strives to enhance strategic planning through the advancement of the art and science of technology roadmapping.
